Synopsis
Spring, 1931. The people of Madrid have taken to the streets en masse to celebrate the proclamation of the Second Republic. The capital vibrates with the changes and enjoys a new era of unprecedented liberties. But while some rejoice in the change of government, others prepare to fight. It is in the dawn of this reality that ‘The Republic’ is born: a new story that recoups the spirit of ‘Lady’ (La señora) to draw the viewer closer into a story of impossible love conditioned by the times. Fascinating times full of stories that unfold in one of Spain’s key historical periods, encompassing the first two years of the new government until the winter of 1933, when the conservative parties wrest control from the Republican government. ‘The Republic’ follows the trail of a number of characters that viewers will be familiar with from ‘Lady’, such as the staunch Republican, Encarna Alcántara (Lucía Jiménez), the conservative military man, Hugo de Viana (Raúl Peña), the anarchist Ventura (Fernando Cayo) or Ludi, the maid of the Márquez family. But it also offers new stories that are illustrative of the new times. These revolve around a new family nucleus - the De la Torre’s - a prestigious family who reside in Madrid but also own a country estate where they have enjoyed some of the happiest moments of their lives. Thus “The Republic’ not only depicts the remarkable historical moment Spain’s capital is undergoing, but also illustrates the conflicts that emerge as a consequence of agrarian reform. All these moments bear upon the birth of a grand love story that will bind the protagonist, Fernando de la Torre (Félix Gómez), to the love of two women, Alejandra (Verónica Sánchez) and Mercedes (Mariona Ribas), and set him against his own best friend, Jesús Prado (Alejo Sauras). Like the fate of the Spain itself, plunging headlong into war, confrontation is guaranteed: ideas against ideas, brother against brother.
