Cerdà’s Eixample: a network of islands
2009
Documentary
Synopsis
Until 1859, when Ildefons Cerdà conceived, designed and carried out the project of the Eixample (or widening) of Barcelona, the city was confined within ancient walls that impeded her growth. Her citizens were stifled, crowded together without hygiene or quality of life. Now, in the 21st century, it is a vast, vibrant and active city that is facing new challenges and has new rules of usage and coexistence. Cerdà’s Eixample: a network of islands reflects upon the foresight and value of Ildefons Cerdà’s legacy, the conception of a city tailored to the needs of its inhabitants and taking into account their dignity, their right to privacy and their coexistence, irrespective of social class.
