1943. In the bitter years following the Spanish civil war, a young schoolmaster is posted to a village in the Catalan Pyrenees, where he settles with his pregnant wife. But his vision of an idyllic life in the mountains soon vanishes as he finds himself obliged to play a deadly game of double cross, trapped between the fascist mayor, Targa, and the clandestine struggle of the Maquis. Fifty years later, another teacher comes across the hidden notebooks where the schoolmaster set down his own story for the child he would never know, diametrically opposed to the Official Story that has been passed down over the years.
