Barcelona, 1387. Hugo Llor, a poor boy from the Ribera neighborhood, will be taken under the protection of Arnau Estanyol, the protagonist of ‘The Cathedral of the Sea’, whose only son, Bernat, is in Alexandria fulfilling commercial missions and will get him a small job in the city’s shipyards. The disturbances that follow the death of Pedro IV will bring, among other consequences, the recovery of royal favor for the Puig family, Arnau’s traditional enemies, who will end up murdering him without Hugo being able to do anything to prevent it. When Arnau’s son, Bernat, returns, he will establish a pact with Hugo to avenge his father’s death, a pact that Hugo, incapable of committing a cold-blooded murder, will not fulfill. Bernat will be forced to flee and, becoming a corsair in favor of Castile, will return to Barcelona after the rise to the throne of Fernando de Antequera and will become admiral of the fleet. Meanwhile, Hugo, with the help of a Jewish family that Arnau defended in the past, will prosper as a winemaker and will live an intense love with Dolça, a love that will end tragically. By intervention of Regina, a friend of Dolça, who practices as a doctor and who feels a sickly passion for Hugo, will adopt Mercè, a girl born in a convent of nuns, without knowing that she is his niece. Over the years, Bernat takes Mercè as his wife. But when he learns of her dark origin, he will end up repudiating her and separating her from their son, who bears the same name as his grandfather. Hugo will fight to defend her, confronting Bernat, who has remarried Marta, a daughter of a noble family. When she becomes pregnant and Bernat is absent, Marta will try to poison Arnau. Hugo will prevent it, but he will not be able to avoid Bernat’s death, which will occur in the shadow of The Cathedral of the Sea.
